OKI Human Rights Independent Committee Demands Iran Stop Attacks on Gulf Countries

JAKARTA - The Independent Human Rights Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed solidarity with the countries affected by the Iranian attack and emphasized the importance of stopping the attack in accordance with international law.

The OKI Human Rights Committee also welcomed the joint statement of the results of the Arab-Islamic foreign ministers meeting in Riyadh on March 18, especially on the emphasis on the importance of protecting civilians and compliance with international law.

In addition, the committee also expressed concern over credible reports regarding the use of ballistic missiles and drones in attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure in a number of OIC member countries, such as oil and water desalination facilities, airports, and diplomatic facilities.

The OIC body said the attack by Iran was a grave violation of international humanitarian and human rights law, particularly with regard to the principles of proportionality and the prohibition of attacks on civilian objects.

Attacks on vital infrastructure, including water and energy facilities, are a major threat to human rights, including the right to life, the right to security, and the right to access basic services, and can result in major humanitarian consequences.

In this context, the OKI Human Rights Committee emphasizes the importance of Iran complying with its obligations under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law, while ensuring the protection of civilians.

The OKI Human Rights Commission also emphasized the importance of accountability and efforts to prevent impunity and encourage independent and transparent investigations in accordance with international standards to ensure justice for victims.

The agency stated that it would continue to monitor and record the human rights impact of the attack based on a proof-based methodology and called on affected OIC countries to provide related reports and data to support its documentation efforts.

The OKI Human Rights Committee emphasizes that compliance with international law is very important to maintain peace and security in the region and the world as well as to protect human dignity.
