Marc Marquez Wins Dramatic First MotoGP Sprint in Brazil
JAKARTA - The first MotoGP Sprint race in Goiania, Brazil, on March 21, immediately presented high-class drama. Marc Marquez emerged as the winner after a fierce duel to the last corner against Fabio Di Giannantonio, while Jorge Martin completed the podium in his emotional comeback.
The race started with Di Giannantonio who performed impressively from pole position and immediately secured the leading position. Behind him, Fabio Quartararo stole the spotlight with an aggressive start, climbed to third place and pressured Marquez. However, Marquez quickly responded to regain second place.
Entering the early laps, Di Giannantonio was able to open a gap of more than one second, while Marquez slowly cut the gap. Behind them, an equally heated competition took place between Quartararo, Marco Bezzecchi, and Martin who were fighting for position.
The momentum changed into the last three laps. Marquez who continued to press finally found a gap and overtook Di Giannantonio to take the lead of the race. Although he was ahead by several tenths of a second, the pressure came again in the last lap when Di Giannantonio stuck close.
The duel between the two reached its climax at the last turn. Marquez had a slight wobble, but was still able to keep the racing line and lock in the victory with a narrow margin of about two tenths of a second. This victory was the first for Marquez in the Sprint this season, as well as equaling the record for the most Sprint wins with Martin.
Meanwhile, Martin performed solidly to finish in third place. This result feels special because it is his first podium since returning from injury and also the first with the Aprilia Racing team since his move.
Bezzecchi had to settle for fourth place, followed by sensational rookie Ai Ogura in fifth. Quartararo completed the top six after appearing aggressive from the start of the race.
In the next position, Alex Marquez finished seventh, just ahead of Francesco Bagnaia. The leader of the provisional standings, Pedro Acosta, was only able to score the last point in ninth place.
Home rider Diogo Moreira also stole the show by finishing in tenth place, providing entertainment for the Brazilian public.
The sprint in Goiania was an explosive and action-packed opener, confirming that the 2026 MotoGP season will be tight from the start. With the hot duel already presented in the Sprint, the spotlight now shifts to the main race which is predicted to bring back a fierce battle.
