OpenAI Prepares a Desktop "Superapp", Combining ChatGPT and Codex in One Platform
JAKARTA - Artificial intelligence company OpenAI is preparing to make major changes to its products. In its latest strategic move, OpenAI plans to combine its various services - including ChatGPT and the Codex coding platform - into a single integrated desktop application or "superapp".
The confirmation was made by the company, corroborating an earlier report from The Wall Street Journal. The goal is clear: simplify the user experience while improving internal efficiency amid the increasingly fierce AI industry competition.
OpenAI President Greg Brockman will temporarily lead the product transformation process. Meanwhile, Head of Applications Fidji Simo will focus on handling marketing and sales strategies as the company prepares to launch the new platform.
In internal communications cited by the report, Simo admitted that OpenAI has been too spread out in the development of various applications and systems. The fragmentation is considered to slow down innovation and make it difficult for the company to achieve the desired quality standards.
This consolidation step is also seen as a response to increasing pressure from competitors such as Anthropic, which continues to strengthen its position in the generative AI market.
Previously, OpenAI had released a separate desktop version of Codex to strengthen its foothold in the programming AI market. However, now, this approach will be changed by integrating all services into a single integrated ecosystem.
With the superapp concept, users are expected to be able to access various functions - from AI conversations, code writing, to possible browser-based features - in one interface. This is expected to not only make it easier to use, but also speed up the development of new features.
This move reflects a trend that is beginning to lead to the integration of AI services into one main platform, instead of being spread across various separate applications.
