Google is preparing the Gemini application for Mac, the impact of the partnership with Apple
JAKARTA - Google's new move marks a change in direction in its relationship with Apple. After a long time of "cold but necessary", Google is now reportedly preparing a native Gemini application for Mac devices.
Bloomberg's report states that the application is currently in a closed beta phase. This information was first revealed by M1Astra application researcher, who found indications of the development of the macOS version of Gemini with features that continue to be expanded.
If released, the Gemini app for Mac will follow in the footsteps of similar AI apps such as ChatGPT and Claude that have already come in the form of native apps. Until now, Mac users can only access Gemini through the browser with relatively limited features.
The presence of this application is also seen as a continuation of the strategic cooperation between Google and Apple in the field of AI. Although the details of the agreement were not disclosed to the public, the integration of Gemini is said to be part of the development of Apple's AI system in the future.
In terms of features, the Gemini app on the Mac is expected to support direct file uploads as well as possible integration with built-in system applications such as calendars, reminders, and photo galleries. This opens up deeper usage opportunities, similar to how AI assistants are beginning to integrate into the device ecosystem.
Interestingly, the launch of this application does not have to wait for the arrival of a new AI model from Apple. This means that the Gemini version of Mac can be launched faster as a standalone product, while waiting for a wider integration at the operating system level.
Apple and Google's relationship itself has been known to be complex. On the one hand, Google is an important partner - for example, as the default search engine on the iPhone. On the other hand, Apple also continues to build a closed ecosystem that often limits third-party flexibility.
But in recent times, signs of "softening" have begun to appear. The presence of applications such as YouTube on Apple Vision Pro and now Gemini on the Mac shows a push towards closer collaboration.
