Germany is considering joining the Hormuz Strait mine clearance mission
JAKARTA - Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt said Germany would likely join efforts to secure shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf region after the conflict ended.
"We may also be involved in operations in the Strait of Hormuz. For example, if it concerns mine clearance or similar missions," Dobrindt told broadcaster ARD, as reported by Sputnik, Thursday, March 19.
The minister echoed Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statement that the conflict in the Middle East "is not Germany's war."
"We are not part of it. We were not consulted beforehand. We are not involved... Germany can remain outside this situation," he added.
Regarding the prospect of migration, Dobrindt said the future situation was still uncertain, but noted that there was no spike in migration from Iran.
On March 14, US President Donald Trump called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, Britain, and other countries to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz to maintain navigation security.
The head of foreign policy of the European Union Kaja Kallas stated that the European Union countries are not ready to send a fleet to the region.
On February 28, the US and Israel launched an attack on a number of targets in Iran, including in Tehran, which caused damage and civilian casualties.
Iran responded by attacking Israeli territory as well as US military facilities in the Middle East as a form of self-defense.
