Malaysia-India Urge End of War in Middle East

JAKARTA - Malaysia and India agreed to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities in the Middle East, involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, and affecting West Asian countries.

The agreement was sparked in a dialogue held by Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi via telephone, Thursday, March 19.

"We agree to call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and to rally efforts to uphold the voice of peace, diplomacy, and constructive dialogue," said Anwar Ibrahim as quoted by ANTARA.

Anwar said his discussion with Modi focused on the latest developments in the West Asia which are getting worse, especially in the month of Ramadan which should be a time of peace and tranquility.

Anwar conveyed Malaysia's firm and consistent stance in condemning the bombing by Israel against Iran which was supported by the United States.

"We also agree that Malaysia and India must join hands to strengthen the collective voice in all international forums, including at the United Nations (UN) and BRICS," he said.

He emphasized that ultimately, solid cooperation is becoming increasingly urgent amid the gloomy global economic situation, including its impact on food security.

"God willing, Malaysia and India will continue to strengthen our joint commitment for world peace," said Anwar.
