Iran Cuts Gas Supply to Iraq Completely

JAKARTA - Iran has completely cut off gas supplies to Iraq used to operate power plants due to military action.

"Due to the escalation of the region, Iran's gas supply to Iraq was completely cut off an hour ago, resulting in the loss of about 3,100 megawatts of electricity," said spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity Ahmed Musa, quoted by ANTARA from Sputnik, Thursday, March 19.

According to him, the ministry has instructed intensive coordination with the country's oil ministry to replace the loss of gas supply with alternative fuels and domestic gas reserves.

Previously on February 28, the United States and Israel launched an attack on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing various damages and killing many civilians.

Iran then retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and American military facilities throughout the Middle East.

Escalations around Iran have led to the suspension of traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key route for the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets.

The suspension of the pipeline has an impact on the region's oil exports and production.
