Josh Groban Brings Back the Nostalgia of 10 Iconic Broadscreen Songs in the Cinematic Album
JAKARTA - American baritone singer Josh Groban brings good news for music and film lovers around the world. Exactly two days before performing on the 2026 Oscars stage, Groban announced plans to release his 10th studio album titled "Cinematic".
The album, produced under the auspices of Reprise Records, is scheduled to officially greet listeners on May 8.
This move marks the musician's return to the recording studio after more than five years of vacuum releasing original works. "Cinematic" is positioned as a companion to the album "Stages" which was released in 2015.
If "Stages" explores the magic of the Broadway stage, then "Cinematic" is Groban's love letter to the world of celluloid. The production process was also carried out across continents, specifically in Los Angeles and London, with the hands of veteran producer Greg Wells.
As a prelude to the album's release, Groban has launched the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". The legendary ballad by Elton John and Tim Rice from The Lion King film is presented with a magnificent arrangement, strengthened by a collaboration with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles.
But the surprise didn't stop there. Groban also teamed up with Jennifer Hudson - who will accompany him on the upcoming North American tour - to perform the popular "Unchained Melody" from the film Ghost.
The emotional side of the album is further intensified by the presence of his father, Jack Groban, who contributed a trumpet solo in the song "Moon River", a classic number from the film Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Through his official statement, the musician who has collected three Grammy nominations in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category revealed the reason behind this ambitious project.
"There's something so powerful about how a song or a musical score can elevate a story and continue to linger in your heart long after the movie credits roll. With 'Cinematic', I wanted to honor that feeling - nostalgia, drama, romance - while bringing my own voice and perspective to these timeless songs," Groban said, quoted by Billboard, Monday, March 16.
"Recording this album feels like stepping into some of the most iconic moments in film history, and I hope listeners will be swept away in the same way I always feel when the lights go down and the music starts," he added.
The curation of songs in this album is also very selective. Of the 10 tracks available, five of them are Oscar winners in the Best Original Song category. Meanwhile, the other songs on the list are Oscar nominees such as "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" by Phil Collins, as well as legendary songs that do not qualify for Oscars but are very similar to the film, such as "As Time Goes By" from the film Casablanca and "Stand By Me".
After starting the GEMS World Tour series in Honolulu in early February, Groban is scheduled to continue the tour to North America from June to July 2026. He is also confirmed to return to The Colosseum at Caesars Palace for a residency titled GEMS The Las Vegas Residency in October.
