Apple Prepares iOS 27 Like Snow Leopard: Focus on Stability and Performance
JAKARTA - Apple is reportedly preparing a somewhat different approach to the next generation of the iPhone operating system. Instead of cramming in a lot of new features, the Cupertino-based technology company is said to prioritize bug fixes and performance improvements in iOS 27.
The report was delivered by technology journalist Mark Gurman in Bloomberg's Power On newsletter. According to him, the philosophy of developing iOS 27 will resemble Apple's approach when releasing Mac OS X Snow Leopard in 2009.
At that time Apple made a pretty unique move in the technology industry. In a presentation at the 2008 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, the company even showed a slide stating that Snow Leopard had "0 new features". The statement certainly does not mean that the system is completely free of new features, but rather emphasizes Apple's focus on improving system performance and stability.
At the time, Apple's head of software engineering, Bertrand Serlet, explained that Apple's engineers made hundreds of behind-the-scenes improvements to make the system feel faster, more responsive, and more reliable in everyday use.
A similar approach is said to be applied to iOS 27. Apple wants to ensure that the iPhone operating system is more stable, reducing bugs that appear in various applications, and improving overall performance.
This move is also seen as Apple's attempt to tidy up the increasing complexity of the system. As new features have been added in recent years - from artificial intelligence on devices, interactive widgets, to cross-device integration - the operating system code has become increasingly complex.
In the world of software engineering, this condition is often referred to as technical debt, which usually needs to be cleaned up through updates that focus on the system's foundation.
Although it focuses on stability, iOS 27 will still bring several new features. One of the ones that are said to be under development is a more personal version of Apple's digital assistant, Siri.
Siri is rumored to get an intelligence boost that allows for more contextual interactions as well as better understanding of user habits.
Apple is expected to officially introduce iOS 27 at its annual developer conference, the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, which usually takes place in June.
If you follow Apple's release pattern so far, the final version of the operating system will likely be launched in September along with the latest generation of iPhones.
This stability-first approach is considered a strategic move. In the daily user experience, a system that opens applications faster, saves more battery, and crashes less often often has a much more noticeable impact than just adding new features that are not necessarily often used.
