The incident occurred when Novel returned home from work when two motorcyclists sprayed hard water on his face.
As a result of the incident, Novel's left eye suffered permanent damage and had to undergo intensive treatment at the Singapore General Hospital. This case became a public spotlight because at that time Novel was handling a number of major corruption cases.
The police only managed to arrest the two perpetrators after almost three years, namely in December 2019. Both perpetrators are members of the National Police who were each sentenced to two years and one and a half years in prison.

A 13-year-old junior high school student named Meisya Chtalin Witak was a victim of hard water spraying while on her way to school. The perpetrator was a 41-year-old man named Charles Arif.
Police said the perpetrator committed the act because he was hurt after his love was not responded to by the victim. As a result of the incident, Meisya suffered serious injuries to the eyes, temples, and lips.
The perpetrator was finally arrested several hours after the incident and sentenced to 20 years in prison, as well as a fine of Rp. 100,000,000 subsider 1 year in prison.
Farah Rizka case in Bekasi (2024)In December 2024, a case of hard water spraying occurred again in North Bekasi. This time it hit a 20-year-old woman named Farah Rizka. The culprit is Arjuhan Rosetiyoni (25), a man who had a relationship with the victim after divorcing her husband.
The action was triggered by jealousy because the victim often met her ex-husband again. "The suspect is the victim's boyfriend since a year ago. Then the suspect felt jealous because the victim was often caught on the street with other men," said Head of Public Relations of the Metro Jaya Police, Kombes Pol Ade Ary Syam Indradi in his statement.
As a result of the incident, Farah suffered burns to almost 60 percent of her body, from her neck, back, thighs to her breasts.
Aceh's Step-Son Case (2024)A more tragic case occurred in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, in December 2024. A man with the initials DM (49) poured hard water on his two stepchildren who were 13 and 16 years old. One of the victims died after undergoing intensive care at the hospital.
Police revealed that the perpetrator carried out the action because he was jealous of his wife.
"In the initial examination, the suspect admitted to pouring sulfuric acid on the two victims because he was angry and jealous of his wife," said Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of Lhokseumawe Police, Iptu Yudha Prasatya, Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Case of a Student in Yogyakarta (2024)The case of hard water spraying also hit a student named Natasya Hutagalung in Yogyakarta on December 24, 2024. The perpetrator was Billy, his ex-girlfriend who did not want their relationship to end.
In his statement, the police revealed that Billy hired a man named Satim to carry out the action. Satim then went to the victim's boarding house and poured the dangerous liquid on his face and body.
"The perpetrator S came at 18.00 to the victim's house. Because the door of the house was a little open, S immediately opened the door and saw the victim finished taking a shower wearing a towel. Immediately it was sprayed with hard water to the victim, hit his face and his whole body." said Satrio, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Yogya Police.
As a result of the incident, the victim suffered serious injuries and underwent intensive treatment at RSUP Sardjito. In addition to physical injuries, the victim also suffered deep trauma.
The Case of Mother and Child in Sukabumi (2025)In May 2025, a case of hard water spraying occurred in Sukabumi City, West Java. A housewife named Yulian Anggraini (35) and her seven-year-old son were victims of an attack by unknown people while on Jalan Sudajaya, Baros District.
The police managed to arrest two perpetrators with the initials Y (47) and H (30). The motive was allegedly due to jealousy after the perpetrator found out that the victim was close to someone else on social media.
"From the information provided to the investigators, H is suspected of being the victim's ex-boyfriend who was jealous after seeing the victim close to his friends on social media," said Head of Public Relations of West Java Police, Kombes Pol. Hendra Rochmawan.
As a result of the incident, Yulian Anggraini and his son suffered burns to several parts of the body and had to receive medical treatment.
