Sinner Sets Record by Winning Indian Wells 2026
JAKARTA - Jannik Sinner has set a record as the first male tennis player to win a Masters 1000 event in a row without losing a set after he beat Daniil Medvedev to reach the highest podium at Indian Wells 2026.
The Italian tennis player, who once ranked number one in the world, won his first title at Indian Wells through a straight two-set victory 7-(6) and 7-6(4) in Indian Wells, California, USA, on Sunday night local time or Monday, March 16, 2026 WIB.
"This is a very, very difficult match. It's great to see Daniil back playing at this level. I'm very happy," said Sinner after his victory, reported from the ATP website.
This is Sinner's first trophy in 2026 and confirms his strength on the hard court. Throughout the tournament, he was dominant and managed to sweep all the matches without losing a set.
In addition, this success makes Sinner now equal to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer as men's tennis players who are able to win all six ATP Masters 1000 level tournaments on hard courts.
"I've been coming here since day one, training very hard and this result makes me very happy. Sharing this moment with the team and friends here is really special," said Sinner.
The final party clash was tight for one hour and 55 minutes. Both tennis players were able to maintain their serves so that none of the break points they managed to convert into points in this match.
Sinner was very solid behind his first serve by winning 43 of 47 points and never in a position to lose a serve game. He got two break points, but they all failed to convert.
The crucial moment in the first set came in the tie-break when Medvedev misread the direction of the ball, allowing it to pass through, but it still entered the playing area. Sinner took advantage of the mistake to grab the opening set.
Medvedev then gave a fierce resistance, especially in the second set. He made Sinner fall behind 0-4 in the tie-break before being hit by a comeback so he failed to win the title in the tournament with the largest audience outside the four Grand Slams.
This is Medvedev's third defeat in the Indian Wells final. He previously lost in two consecutive finals in 2023 and 2024, all of which were against Carlos Alcaraz, the current world number one.
