Donald Trump invites oil-importing countries to join in maintaining the security of the Strait of Hormuz
JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump, Saturday (14/3), called on oil-importing countries, whose shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, to ensure the security of the route by promising assistance and coordination from America.
"The countries of the world that get oil through the Strait of Hormuz must guard the passage and we will help, a lot!" Trump said on social media Truth Social.
He also promised that Washington would coordinate with these countries so that everything goes quickly, smoothly, and well.
"This should always be a team effort and now it will be. It will unite the world toward lasting harmony, security, and peace," Trump wrote in the post.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz was almost halted after the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and American military bases in the Middle East.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets, which includes about 20 percent of global trade in oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas.
