Human Rights Activist Discharged with Hot Water OTK, Commission III DPR: Police Must Immediately Arrest the Perpetrators

Member of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Abdullah, urged the Indonesian National Police to thoroughly investigate the case of water spraying against human rights activists who are the Deputy Coordinator for External Affairs of Kontras, Andrie Yunus. He asked the police to immediately arrest the perpetrator and charge him with a heavier article.

Abdullah emphasized that the brutal act was not ordinary criminality, but was suspected of being an attempt to murder and intimidation against human rights defenders (HAM).

"We strongly condemn this action. This is not just a common crime, but it is suspected to be an attempted murder of an activist who is vocal about human rights," said Abdullah, Saturday, March 14.

"The police must move quickly, arrest the perpetrator, and trap them with the charge article," continued the member of the legal commission.

The PKB legislator from the Central Java District also highlighted the fact that none of the victim's valuables were lost in the incident. According to him, this strengthens the indication that the motive for the attack is purely aimed at injuring and silencing the critical voices of civil society.

"The fact that no goods were seized indicates that this was not a robbery, but a planned attack to terrorize the victim," said Abdullah.

"All forms of violence against human rights defenders are a real threat to our democracy," he added.

Commission III of the DPR also asked law enforcement officials to immediately secure CCTV footage around the scene of the incident and trace the possibility of a mastermind or intellectual actor behind this attack.

Abdullah emphasized that police transparency in this case is crucial to provide a sense of security for the public in expressing their opinions.

"The police must work professionally and be accountable. Reveal who the culprit is and who is behind it. This case should not be allowed to drag on without legal certainty," he said.

It is known that this tragic incident occurred in front of the YLBHI office, Jakarta, shortly after the victim completed recording a podcast (podcast) themed criticism of remilitarization, Thursday, March 12, midnight.

As a result of the attack, Andrie suffered serious burns to the face, eyes, chest, and both hands.
