Video Podcast Becomes a Medium for Women Creators to Create a Wide and Meaningful Discussion Space

JAKARTA - Podcasts are developing in the current era with a video format that is widely sought after in Indonesia. Female creators in the country also use this format to share stories, build communities, and present conversations that reflect the reality of modern life.

Globally, more than 250 million users have watched podcast videos on Spotify. For many female creators, the video format opens up new possibilities in their work.

Video format allows for more felt expressions of emotion, more real reactions, and visual storytelling that strengthens the closeness with the audience. Podcasts that were previously attached to the audio format are now evolving into a more immersive and personal experience through video.

Indonesian creators use different approaches in this format. MALAKA, which became the Top Education Podcast Indonesia 2025 on Spotify Wrapped Live, uses video to make complex social and historical discussions easier for a wider audience to understand.

"At MALAKA, we depart from a shared concern for literacy and humanity in public conversations. We want to create a platform where ideas, history, and social issues can be discussed in a way that is more accessible to many people. Through podcasting and digital platforms such as Spotify, we can reach a wider audience and encourage more meaningful dialogue," said Cania Citta, Co-founder and Host MALAKA in a written statement received by VOI, March 12.

Connection with listeners is becoming increasingly important in podcast growth. Three out of four Spotify users say that when watching podcasts, they feel connected to the creators they like and videos strengthen that bond. Conversations about careers, relationships, identity, literacy, and well-being become more meaningful when users can see the expressions behind the words thrown by the hosts.

"Through In Her View, we want to create a space where we can share our stories more openly," said Caroline Soerachmat from In Her View.

"After years of telling other people's stories as journalists, this podcast allows us to talk about our own experiences, including the challenges, failures, and lessons that shaped us today. The ability to connect with listeners through this honest conversation is something that means a lot to us."

Spotify's latest study also shows that the reason users in Indonesia watch podcasts is mostly to learn new things and get the latest information. Users are also more likely to continue listening when they feel connected to the creator and the topics discussed.

"Initially, I made 'Biar Ga Nyesel' as a very personal motivation, but it eventually turned into something that felt so special to me. Over time, video podcasting has become a space to share about career journeys, life choices, and questions that we all face. I am very grateful to see how the conversation can relate to the listeners," explained Tasya Alma, the creator behind Biar Ga Nyesel who entered the Top 5 Self Care Podcasts 2025 in Wrapped Live Indonesia.

Behind the scenes, the various tools in Spotify for Creators help creators better understand their audience and help approach their content. Interactive elements such as 'Comments' and 'Polls' further strengthen the relationship with the audience, turning listeners into an active community.

"Videos make podcasting more immersive and expressive, both for creators and audiences," said Carl Zuzarte, Head of Podcast Spotify Southeast Asia. "In Indonesia and globally, more and more female creators are playing a role in bringing new perspectives to today's conversations. We want to continue to drive the growth of video podcasts driven by female creators, as well as provide the tools and insights they need to grow, so that Spotify can continue to be a home for creators to work."

As more and more Indonesian female creators bring their perspectives and stories to video podcasts, Spotify continues to grow its podcast ecosystem and remains committed to supporting creators on their journey, helping ensure that more diverse voices, especially from female creators, have the opportunity to be found, heard, and appreciated.
