8.716 Measles Cases in Indonesia until the 9th Week of 2026, the Ministry of Health Records 45 KLB in 11 Provinces

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Health has recorded a trend in measles cases in Indonesia which had increased in early January 2026 before starting to decline at the end of the same month until now.

Acting Director General of Disease Control at the Ministry of Health Andi Saguni said that national monitoring showed thousands of suspected and measles cases throughout the beginning of this year.

"Nationally, the trend of measles suspects and cases has been reported to have increased since the beginning of January and has started to decline at the end of January 2026 until now," Andi told reporters, Friday, March 13.

Data up to week 9 of 2026 shows that the number of suspected and measles cases is still quite high. It is recorded that as many as 10,826 suspects and 8,716 cases, and there were 45 extraordinary measles (KLB) cases in 29 districts/cities in 11 provinces.

The Ministry of Health also noted the weekly trend of laboratory-confirmed measles cases in 11 provinces affected by KLB generally began to decline.

However, there are several areas that still show high case numbers, one of which is in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province, especially in Bima Regency and Bima City.

In addition, there are 10 regencies/cities with the highest number of measles suspects and cases throughout 2026. These areas include South Tangerang City, Bima Regency, Tangerang Regency, Depok City, to DKI Jakarta areas such as West Jakarta and Central Jakarta.

Several other cities that also recorded high case numbers include Pandeglang, Palu City, Palembang City, and Padang City.

To suppress the spread of the disease, local governments in the affected areas of KLB carried out outbreak response immunization (ORI) or measles-rubella outbreak response immunization for children aged 9 to 59 months.

Data as of March 12, 2026 shows that as many as 22 regencies/cities that have experienced KLB have carried out MR ORI with varying coverage.

Some of the areas with the highest coverage include Pamekasan at 47.93 percent and Jember at 38.64 percent. Meanwhile, other areas still record low coverage such as the City of Tangerang which has only reached 0.2 percent.

In addition to ORI, the government is also carrying out catch-up immunization or simultaneous measles-rubella immunization in a number of areas with high cases.

Based on the Ministry of Health's data, the five regions with the highest measles cases that implemented the program include West Jakarta City, Central Jakarta City, Depok City, South Tangerang City, and Palu City.

"The measles immunization service is very important to provide immunity or immune protection from measles disease," he said.

Measles immunization services are currently accessible to the public through health facilities such as health centers and posyandu. In addition, the government also provides immunization services at homecoming service posts located at airports and ports to reach people who travel.

The Ministry of Health also reminded the importance of the role of parents in ensuring that children have received immunizations according to schedule, namely at the age of 9 months and 18 months. In addition to ensuring immunization, parents are also asked to check the child's health condition before traveling home.

"Parental concern is also needed to assess the child's condition before returning home, by checking body temperature, checking skin condition, having symptoms of cough, cold or red eyes. If there are symptoms, immediately check to the faskes and it is better to postpone traveling because it will be transmitted to others," said Andi.

The Ministry of Health reminds that the measles virus has a very high contagiousness so that prevention must be taken seriously, namely one patient can transmit to 12-18 people.

In addition to immunization, the government also continues to encourage the implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS), including the use of masks when sick and the habit of washing hands.
