Beware! Ex-Cyclone Nuri Causes Heavy Rain in North Sulawesi, Malut, and Papua Mountains
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that a number of areas in Indonesia have the potential to experience heavy to very heavy rain due to the influence of the former tropical cyclone Nuri and other atmospheric activities in the regional area.
BMKG Praktirawan Nazmi said that the former tropical cyclone Nuri was observed in the northern Pacific Ocean of Papua with a maximum wind speed of about 25 knots and a minimum air pressure of 1003 hektopascal.
The system is reported to be moving east to northeast and in the next 48 to 72 hours is expected to have wind speeds ranging from 20-25 knots with a minimum pressure of around 1,002 hectopascals.
The existence of the former tropical cyclone Nuri, quoted by Antara, induces the formation of convergence and confluence areas in the northern Pacific Ocean of Papua which increases the potential for the growth of rain clouds in the surrounding area.
BMKG is also monitoring the presence of low pressure areas in the northern Australian mainland which trigger the formation of low level jet wind flow from the Arafuru Sea to the northern coast of Australia.
This condition triggers the formation of convergence and confluence areas in the ocean south of Timor Island, which also increases the potential for the formation of rain clouds in eastern Indonesia.
BMKG predicts that heavy to very heavy rain may occur in North Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Papua Mountains.
A number of major cities are expected to experience rain with varying intensities, including rain accompanied by lightning in Tanjung Pinang, Tanjung Selor, Banjarmasin, and Manado.
Light rain is predicted to occur in a number of cities, such as Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Jambi, Pangkal Pinang, Palembang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palangka Raya, Samarinda, Denpasar, Mataram, Mamuju, Palu, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, and Jayapura, while cloudy weather is predicted to occur in Serang, Jakarta, and Pontianak and hazy air conditions in Bandung.
