TikTok and Apple Music Partnership Supports Music Integration and Discovery
JAKARTA - TikTok strengthens its position as the epicenter of the world's music discovery through a strategic collaboration with technology giant Apple Music.
ByteDance's short video platform has just introduced a feature called "Play Full Song", an advanced integration that allows users to listen to songs in full directly within the TikTok ecosystem.
This move is a big leap after TikTok decided to "sunk" their standalone streaming service, TikTok Music, in November 2024.
Through this update, the "Play Full Song" button will appear automatically on the For You Page (FYP) page and the sound detail page. Meanwhile, for users who subscribe to Apple Music, they no longer have to bother closing the TikTok application just to find the title of the viral song.
Ole Obermann, a representative from Apple Music, confirmed that this collaboration aims to remove barriers between the moment of discovering a song and the deep listening experience.
"Accessing the music you love should feel effortless. With Play Full Song, Apple Music customers can easily move from finding a track on TikTok to listening to it in full instantly, without interrupting their flow of activity," said Obermann, quoted by Variety, Thursday, March 12.
"This integration creates a powerful new path for artists to turn moments of discovery into deeper connections and ongoing engagement in one simple, seamless experience," he added.
Meanwhile, TikTok's Head of Music Business Development, Tracy Gardner, assessed that this step is a form of adaptation of the platform to the speed of the community's culture.
"TikTok is a place where music and cultural discovery moves as fast as its community. Thanks to Apple Music, Play Full Song provides a seamless way for fans to go from discovery to listening to the full duration, and Listening Party provides a shared place to enjoy music together in real-time," said Gardner.
In addition to full listening access, users are also given the convenience of storing the song in their music library or inserting it into an Apple Music playlist instantly.
Not only about the duration of the song, this collaboration also gave birth to the "Listening Party" feature, which is designed as a digital communal space for fans to listen to albums or songs from certain artists simultaneously while interacting through a real-time chat column.
Although currently the curation of artists for the "Listening Party" is still limited to the selected big names, TikTok plans to expand this feature globally in the coming weeks to reach more independent musicians and music lovers around the world.
The presence of this feature also emphasizes TikTok's position of preferring to be a strategic partner for major streaming service providers rather than being a direct competitor in the digital music industry.
