Kompany Faces Difficult Tactical Situation after Bayern Munich's Victory over Atalanta

Alphonso Davies covered his face with his shirt as he left the field with an injury in Bayern Munich's match against Atalanta in the first leg of the Champions League 16th round on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, early morning WIB. It also raised questions about the availability of the Canadian player for the 2026 World Cup.

The injury as well as other injuries suffered by Jamal Musiala and goalkeeper Jonas Urbig colored Bayern Munich's crushing victory over Atalanta 6-1.

Although Kompany hinted that Davies' injury may not be too serious in his post-match comments and expressed his confidence in the depth of the Bayern Munich squad, the situation still left him facing a difficult tactical decision.

"It's a shame, but I told the players that I fully trust our squad. We have to get through some games without him (Davies)," Kompany told Prime Video.

The match against Atalanta began with doubts about whether Bayern Munich could complete its task without Harry Kane or not. The answer is clear when Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, and Serge Gnabry perform brilliantly and make Kane a reserve player who is not used.

After being able to overcome the absence of a key striker, now Kompany has to deal with the potential absence of his main left back (Davies) and two main goalkeepers.

Davies took a crouched position on the pitch after suffering an injury that did not seem to be the result of physical contact while playing the ball when Bayern Munich was 6-0 up in the 70th minute. He seemed to be in pain immediately, covering his face, and waving his hands in frustration.

Team-mates gathered around the Canadian left-back to shield him from view before he was helped off the pitch by Bayern Munich staff, his shirt collar pulled up to cover his face.

Davies covered his eyes with his hands as he was approached on the sidelines by substitute Tom Bischof and Manager Vincent Kompany.

Davies was a key player for Canada when they returned to the 2022 World Cup and captained the team at the 2024 Copa America, but he has struggled with injuries.

He only played for Bayern Munich in December 2025 this season after suffering an ACL injury in March 2025 in his last game for Canada.

Canada will co-host the 2026 World Cup in June and July with the United States and Mexico. They are scheduled to face Iceland and Tunisia in warm-up matches later this month.

Despite that, Die Roten were ahead after Musiala scored the sixth goal and almost broke the record for the biggest win of all time in a Champions League knockout match when Dayot Upamecano headed the ball against the crossbar shortly afterwards.

Bayern Munich are now one of only four teams to score six goals in a Champions League knockout tie away from home.

The match ended with further concerns for Kompany as Musiala - who only returned to action in January 2026 after breaking his leg at the 2025 Club World Cup - limped off the pitch in injury time after previously appearing to struggle with an ankle problem.

Kompany had used all his substitutions so Bayern Munich only had 10 players when Atalanta launched a counterattack to score the consolation goal.

The goal brought more suffering for Die Roten as Urbig - who replaced first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer - collided with Nikola Krstovic and appeared shaken as he left the field.

The only good news is a sign that Kane may be back soon ahead of Bayern Munich's match against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga this weekend.

Kane actually wanted to be brought off against Atalanta, but by then the score was 5-0 and he was better off resting by Kompany.
