Car Sales in Indonesia Increased in February 2026, Reached This

JAKARTA - The national automotive market is beginning to show signs of improvement in early 2026. This can be seen from the increase in retail new car sales or the distribution of vehicles from dealers directly to consumers throughout February.

Launching from the data of the Indonesian Motor Vehicle Industry Association (Gaikindo), Tuesday, March 10, retail sales in February 2026 reached 78,219 units. This figure increased by 16.7 percent compared to January 2026 which was at the level of 67,009 units.

This increase is a signal that demand for new vehicles is slowly moving again after weakening at the beginning of the year.

Not only at the retail level, the distribution of vehicles from the factory to dealers or wholesales also experienced growth.

Throughout February 2026, wholesales were recorded at 81,159 units, up 22.1 percent compared to January which reached 66,472 units.

Cumulatively, retail new car sales for the first two months of 2026 have reached 145,228 units.

With the trend starting to improve, this achievement is expected to still have the potential to increase in the coming months. However, the automotive industry is still facing a number of challenges.

One of the things that is quite noticeable is the end of the electric vehicle incentive, which makes the price of several models of Electric Vehicles (EV) also undergo adjustments, including those that have been produced locally.

Some manufacturers have even raised the prices of their products. XPeng, for example, adjusted the price of the X9 electric MPV with an increase of more than IDR 100 million. The same thing happened to the Hyundai Kona Electric and Ioniq 5 which experienced price increases of around IDR 49 million to IDR 74 million for the Jakarta area.

In the midst of this condition, a number of manufacturers are trying to maintain market interest by presenting new models with competitive prices. One of them is the seven-passenger electric MPV Wuling Darion EV which is marketed at a range of Rp. 399 million to Rp. 459 million.

Japanese manufacturers are also taking similar steps. At the 2026 IIMS event, Toyota and Honda introduced new variants at more affordable prices.

Toyota, for example, launched the Alphard XE as the most basic type of luxury MPV with a price of IDR 1.28 billion. In addition, there is also a Yaris Cross Hybrid G type which is the cheapest variant with a price tag of IDR 399 million.

These various strategies are expected to provide more options for consumers, while maintaining the momentum of national automotive market growth amid various challenges that still haunt the industry.
