ChatGPT Returns to Top of US App Store After Claude's Position Is Displaced
JAKARTA - ChatGPT again ranked first on the US App Store as of March 9. This position was briefly taken by Claude due to a new contract between OpenAI and the US Department of Defense (DOD).
Local communities reacted strongly after OpenAI took over a multimillion-dollar contract with the Pentagon. The institution had offered a similar contract to Anthropic, but the Artificial Intelligence (AI) company rejected it.
As a result, ChatGPT users had a mass uninstall action which caused the number of application deletions to jump by 295 percent. This condition made Anthropic's Claude reach the top of the App Store for the first time on March 1.
However, this shift in interest only lasted briefly because ChatGPT again led the market. Even though Claude fell in rank, the competition between these two applications on the App Store is still very tight with Claude occupying the second position.
The controversy over the removal of ChatGPT comes at a time when the app has been experiencing a shrinking number of daily users in the US over the past year. Launching from 9to5mac, its user numbers fell from 69.1 percent to 45.3 percent in a year.
On the other hand, Gemini recorded growth by reaching 750 million monthly active users. Gemini's growth has been recorded much faster than ChatGPT in recent months.
Anthropic has also begun to attract users after launching an advertising campaign during the Super Bowl. The company is now positioning itself as a more reliable alternative to other AI models.
Even though ChatGPT has returned to the top position, OpenAI's dominance is no longer as strong as it was at the beginning of its launch. The emergence of Claude and Gemini as strong alternatives continues to encourage OpenAI to innovate a lot so that the number of users experiences growth.
