Congratulate Mojtaba Khamenei, President Putin Emphasizes Russia's Support for Iran
JAKARTA - President Vladimir Putin congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his election as Supreme Leader of Iran, affirming Moscow's support for Tehran.
The Kremlin said on Monday that President Putin's congratulations to Mojtaba were conveyed through a telegram.
"Now, when Iran faces armed aggression, your work in this high post will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication. I am confident that you will honorably continue the work of your father and unite the Iranian people in the face of a severe ordeal," the Kremlin statement said, launching Anadolu (9/3).
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the first day of the Israeli and US attack on Tehran on February 28, triggering an escalation in the Middle East.
Mojtaba, who is the son of the late Ali Khamenei, was elected as his father's successor by winning 85 percent of the vote in the election in the Expert Assembly, according to the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta.
According to the statement, President Putin reiterated Moscow's support for Tehran, saying Russia would remain a reliable partner for Iran.
"On my part, I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends. Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner for the Islamic Republic. I wish you success in solving the difficult tasks before you, as well as good health and strength of spirit," the Kremlin said.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, became the third Supreme Leader of Iran in history.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian described his appointment as a step towards strengthening national unity.
