InJourney Turns On Malioboro's Iconic Hotel, Grand Hotel De Djokja Soon to Open Again
JAKARTA - InJourney Hospitality through Hotel Indonesia Natour (HIN) will reopen a historic hotel in the Malioboro area, Yogyakarta.
The hotel that will be revived uses its original name, Grand Hotel De Djokja, and is scheduled to have a soft opening before Lebaran 2026.
InJourney Hospitality President Director Christine Hutabarat said the reopening of the hotel was part of an effort to provide a stay experience that is not only comfortable, but also full of historical value.
"Alhamdulillah, praise God, March 16, 2026, we will hold a soft opening of one of the InJourney hotels in the Malioboro area. So its name is Grand Hotel De Djokja," said Christine in a press conference regarding the readiness of InJourney Hospitality to welcome the 2026 Lebaran holiday at the Sarinah Building, Jakarta, Monday, March 9.
Christine explained that the hotel building has a strong historical value because it has witnessed General Soedirman's struggle to defend the sovereignty of the country.
Therefore, management decided to return the name and the architecture of the building to its original form as when it was first established in 1911.
"This hotel is a witness to the history of General Soedirman, the Great Commander, when defending the sovereignty of the country. So we are restoring its name, restoring its architecture to the year it was founded, namely 1911," said Christine.
He said the hotel has a long history with various name changes.
When it first stood in 1911, the hotel was called the Grand Hotel De Djokja.
During the Japanese occupation around 1942, its name was changed to Hotel Asahi.
Then in 1948, continued Christine, the name of the hotel changed again to Merdeka Hotel.
In its subsequent journey, the hotel was also known as the Garuda Hotel, Natour Garuda, Inna Garuda, and Grand Inna Malioboro before it was finally closed for renovation.
Now, continued Christine, the name Grand Hotel De Djokja is again used as part of the Heritage Collection owned by InJourney Hospitality.
"Well, for the special soft opening, we will start from Rp. 1,911,000 per night, according to the year of its establishment," said Christine.
As part of the heritage concept, management also places a book entitled Melihat Indonesia dari Jendela Kamar Hotel in every room that tells the history of the hotel.
In addition, several rooms are designed with concepts related to the figure of General Soedirman.
"One of the room types is also called Sudirman Suite to honor the figure," said Christine.
Overall, Grand Hotel De Djokja has 210 rooms.
A total of 16 rooms are in the heritage area which maintains the character of the old building, while the rest are in the new tower.
Other facilities available include executive suites, swimming pools, ballrooms that can accommodate around 800 to 900 people for MICE activities, various meeting rooms, and grand deluxe rooms.
