International Women's Day 2026: Women's Leadership and Biorock Technology Secure Food from the Sendang Biru Coast
JAKARTA - In commemorating International Women's Day, a new milestone in the conservation of the East Java sea was officially confirmed. The Bhakti Alam Sendang Biru Foundation together with Biorock Indonesia, with the support of global philanthropy Daughters For Earth, announced the successful installation of the first Biorock Garden structure in East Java.
This strategic project is the result of a year-long dedication to technical and social preparation (2025-2026). The culmination, the process of submerging the coral reef structure with Biorock technology - which marks the first official Biorock Indonesia project in East Java - has been successfully implemented on February 23-27, 2026 at Tiga Warna Beach, CMC Ecotourism area, Sendang Biru.
Karang Recovery as a Food Security Pillar of Sendang Biru is one of the largest tuna landing ports in Indonesia. However, coral reef degradation forces fishermen to go further to sea due to the loss of coastal fish habitat. The Biorock Garden structure is designed as a natural food warehouse to restore the independence of local fishermen.
"We are not only building a park under the sea; we are rebuilding a home for our food sources," said Lia Putrinda, founder of the Bhakti Alam Sendang Biru Foundation. "This collaboration gives new hope after the failure of conventional methods in the past. This is the beginning of a history where coral recovery is able to make fishermen prosperous."
Technical Empowerment and Women's Independence Over the past year, the main focus of this project has been the transfer of technology to the Bhakti Alam Sendang Biru Team. This local team is now independent in designing structures to installing low-voltage electrical systems that make corals grow 3-5 times faster.
Prawita Tasya Karissa, Director of Biorock Indonesia, added, "The strength of this project lies in the Bhakti Alam Sendang Biru Team, which has become a technical expert in its own region. They are the driving force of technology for the future of Sendang Biru food".
