TNBTS Closes Ranu Regulo from Extreme Weather Imbas Tourism Activities

MALANG - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has closed the Ranu Regulo area from tourist activities on Sunday (8/3) until an undetermined time limit, due to the potential for extreme weather during March 2026.

Head of the TNBTS Head Office Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha said the closure of Ranu Regulo was an effort to anticipate the occurrence of a situation that would endanger tourists.

"The decision to close Ranu Regulo is a form of anticipating and avoiding undesirable things. Then, ensure the safety and comfort of visitors there," said Rudi as quoted by ANTARA, Monday, March 9.

The TNBTS Headquarters officially conveyed the closure of Ranu Regulo through the Announcement Letter Number: PG.1/T.8/TU/KSA.02.01/B/03/2026 dated March 8, 2026.

The closure of the area is a follow-up and considers the appeal from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) regarding the potential for extreme weather caused by the active Asian monsoon winds.

In addition, extreme weather is caused by disturbances in the low atmosphere, the Madden-Julian oscillation or MJO, the equatorial Rossby that crosses the East Java region.

Then, also because of the warming of the sea surface temperature in the Madura Strait area and the unstable conditions in the local atmosphere in East Java.

The extreme weather conditions that occurred during March 2026 caused heavy rainfall that could trigger disasters such as landslides, fallen trees and strong winds. This condition can endanger the lives of tourists.

Based on data from the TNBTS Headquarters, the total number of tourists who have made reservations for visiting Ranu Regulo through the bromotenggersemeru.id page, in the period from 8 to 31 March reached 156 people and all of them were domestic tourists.

Rudi stated that his party would open a service to reschedule visits to Ranu Regulo.

"The mechanism for rescheduling will be conveyed before the certainty of the tourist attraction is reopened," he said.
