The peak of the 2026 Lebaran Homecoming is estimated to be on March 16 and 18
JAKARTA - Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi said that the density of the Lebaran 1447 Hijriah/2026 Masehi homecoming flow is estimated to occur on March 16 and March 18 based on the results of the simulation of the projection of community movement at that time.
"Indeed, from the results of our simulation, there are two dates when the homecoming will occur, the estimated density on Monday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 18," said the Minister of Transportation, quoted by ANTARA, Saturday, March 7.
Dudy explained that the government had proposed a work from anywhere (WFA) policy to help reduce the density of the homecoming flow and the policy had received approval from the president.
The Minister of Transportation said the government proposed the implementation of the WFA policy for five days during the Lebaran homecoming and return flow to distribute the movement of the community so that it does not accumulate on certain dates.
For the homecoming flow, the WFA policy is planned to take effect on March 16 and 17 so that the public has flexibility in travel time before the peak traffic density occurs, said Dudy.
Meanwhile, for the Lebaran return flow, the government proposed the implementation of WFA on March 25, 26 and 27 after the Idul Fitri holiday ended.
According to him, the implementation of this policy is aimed at distributing traffic density because the number of vehicles used by the community during the homecoming is expected to be very large.
He said that private vehicles such as cars, motorcycles and buses are still the dominant mode of transportation used by the public during the Lebaran homecoming travel period.
Based on the results of the Ministry of Transportation's simulation, the number of community movements on March 16 nationwide is estimated to reach around 21.2 million people.
Meanwhile, on March 18, the number of community movements is estimated to be even higher, namely around 22 million people, making it one of the peak points of the Lebaran homecoming flow.
With the implementation of the WFA policy, the government hopes that the number of movements on March 16 can decrease to around 18 to 18.9 million people.
And on March 18, the number of community movements is expected to decrease to around 15.6 million people so that the density of homecoming flows can be more controlled.
Dudy explained that the movement of the community is estimated to have started to increase since Friday, March 13, which was originally projected to be around 4.4 million trips.
After the WFA policy was implemented, the number of movements on March 13 is estimated to increase to around eight to almost nine million trips or almost double the initial projection.
The projection for the movement of Lebaran passengers in 2026 is estimated to have decreased by around 1.7 percent compared to the previous year, from 146.4 million people to around 143.9 million people.
The data was obtained from a survey conducted by the government before the implementation of Lebaran transportation to map the potential movement of the community and prepare national transportation facilities and infrastructure.
The survey was carried out by the Ministry of Transportation in collaboration with the Bandung Institute of Technology (LAPI ITB), Bandung Central Statistics Agency (BPS), and the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi).
