The Regent of Southeast Maluku Discusses Strengthening Seagrass and Fishermen's Villages with the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia

JAKARTA - The Regent of Southeast Maluku, Thaher Hanubun, held an audience with the Deputy Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Admiral TNI (Ret.) Dr. Didit Herdiawan at the Mina Bahari Building, Jakarta, March 6, 2026. The meeting discussed strengthening the development of the marine and fisheries sector to encourage the maritime economy in Southeast Maluku.

During the meeting, a number of strategic issues were discussed, including the development of seaweed cultivation, strengthening capture fisheries, and expanding the Red and White Fishermen's Village Program.

The Regent of Southeast Maluku, Thaher Hanubun, said his region has great marine potential and needs to be supported by policies and programs from the central government.

"Maluku Tenggara has abundant marine resources. We want to ensure that this potential can provide economic benefits for coastal communities, especially fishermen and seaweed farmers," he said.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has expressed support for the plan to develop seaweed commodities in Southeast Maluku. The regional government is asked to prepare a program proposal as the basis for follow-up support from the ministry.

In addition, the capture fisheries sector is also a concern in the discussion. The local government encourages the strengthening of fishing production facilities, including fleet support, fishing gear, and supporting infrastructure.

Deputy Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Didit Herdiawan assessed that the development of marine potential in island areas such as Southeast Maluku has an important role in strengthening the national maritime economy.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries also agreed to add the Red and White Fishermen Village Program in Southeast Maluku. Currently, there are two locations that have received initial approval for development.
