Jimly Asshiddiqie Comes to the Palace: Polri Reform is Left to the President's Decision, BoP Asked to be Suspended
JAKARTA - The Chairman of the Indonesian Police Reform Acceleration Commission and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectual Association, Jimly Asshiddiqie, visited the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta.
He said he wanted to "whisper" to the President for time, so that the report of the National Police Reform Commission would be decided at the highest level.
"The Commission for Acceleration of Reform has completed its duties," said Jimly, Thursday, March 5.
According to him, the work of the commission is only waiting for a decision that the team cannot take on its own, so it needs the President's direction. Jimly admitted that he had asked for time, but the schedule was delayed due to the President's agenda, including plans before the visit to America, and then changed again due to the war situation.
Jimly said that his arrival this time was a personal invitation and he was present as Chairman of the ICMI Advisory Council. However, he emphasized that he still wanted to slip in a request for time to report the commission's results. "Later I want to whisper, ask for time," he said.
Beyond the issue of police reform, Jimly also touched on the Iran-Israel conflict and American involvement. He expressed his appreciation for the official statement of the President, which, according to him, conveyed condolences to the government and people of Iran for the death of the country's supreme leader.
Jimly said the move was appropriate as a humanitarian attitude, regardless of Indonesia's relationship with America or religious differences.
However, the former Constitutional Court Chairman assessed that condolences were not enough. He associated the war situation with Indonesia's position on the Board of Peace. He proposed that Indonesia suspend its membership obligations, not withdraw, with two conditions. First, until the Iran-versus-America and Israel war subsides. And, second, until there is certainty about the schedule for Israel's recognition of Palestinian independence. "If there is certainty, we will be active again," he said.
Jimly also encouraged Indonesia to play a more important role as a bridge so that the Islamic world is not divided by conflicts and infighting, including the Sunni-Shiite narrative.
