Galaxy Cruiser Becomes a New Weapon for Geely to Challenge Land Rover Defender

JAKARTA - Geely Automobile has begun to unveil a little bit about its latest off-road SUV which is prepared as a competitor to the Land Rover Defender. This model is the mass production version of the Geely Galaxy Cruiser concept car which was introduced last year and is planned to be launched into the global market this year.

The Chinese manufacturer released a number of official images showing the vehicle undergoing extreme weather testing at the Colmis test facility in the Arctic Circle, near Arjeplog, Sweden.

During the test, Geely examined various important aspects such as air conditioning system performance, powertrain efficiency, and vehicle traction ability when faced with severe environmental conditions.

From the look, this SUV still maintains the design lines of the Geely Galaxy Cruiser concept. However, some elements have been adjusted for mass production needs, such as the presence of LiDAR sensors on the roof, updated bumper design, and more advanced driving sensor systems.

Even so, the offroad character is still maintained through the high ground clearance, large wheel arches, and side model tailgate equipped with spare tires. The unit being tested is still wrapped in camouflage, but a number of design details are already visible.

The SUV uses conventional door handles, large-sized front and rear lights, and a short overhang. Overall, its exterior style is reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender.

Previously, Geely also stated that the Cruiser would be marketed globally as a direct challenger to the iconic SUV. Until now Geely has not revealed its complete specifications. However, it was previously mentioned that this vehicle would use a plug-in hybrid drive system.

Reported by Carnewschina, Wednesday, March 4, it is likely that this SUV shares technology with the AWD variant of the Geely Galaxy M9 which combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with three electric motors. The system is capable of producing a peak power of up to 640 kW or equivalent to 848 hp, and is supported by a battery with a capacity of 41.5 kWh.

One of the unique features prepared for the Galaxy Cruiser is the ability to "swim". This vehicle is claimed to be able to cross puddles or small ponds at a speed of around 8.5 km/h.

In addition, this SUV is expected to be equipped with Geely's G-Pilot H7 driving assistance system which is supported by more than 30 sensors as well as Nvidia Drive Thor chips with computing capabilities of up to 700 TOPS. Geely Galaxy Cruiser is rumored to make its official debut at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show which will be held at the end of April.
