BMKG: Batam Residents Can Witness Total Lunar Eclipse Today Starting at 18.33 WIB
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) through the Hang Nadim Batam Meteorology Station said that the total lunar eclipse phenomenon could be witnessed by the Batam community today Tuesday, March 3 at 18.33 WIB and ended completely at 21.24 WIB.
Head of the Data and Information Section of the BMKG Hang Nadim Batam Suratman explained that a total lunar eclipse occurs when the position of the Sun, Earth, and Moon are in a straight line, so that the Earth's shadow completely covers the Moon.
"If the sky is clear and not covered by clouds, people can see the color of the Moon turning reddish during the peak phase of the eclipse," he said when confirmed in Batam, Tuesday, quoted by Antara.
His party said this phenomenon can be seen with the naked eye without special aids. However, the use of binoculars or telescopes can help see the details of the Moon's surface more clearly.
"A total lunar eclipse can be seen anywhere as long as the sky is not covered by clouds," he added.
In addition to being an interesting astronomical phenomenon, the lunar eclipse that is adjacent to the Full Moon phase on March 3, 2026 also has the potential to affect the condition of the tide of seawater.
BMKG Hang Nadim Batam conveyed the potential for an increase in maximum sea level height that could trigger coastal flooding (rob) from February 25 to March 8, 2026 in a number of coastal areas of the Riau Islands.
"We have given warnings about flash floods from last week," he said.
Based on monitoring of water level data and tide predictions, coastal communities are advised to be alert to the potential occurrence of coastal flooding (rob) from February 25, 2026 to March 8, 2026 in several coastal areas of Karimun.
The phenomenon of the Full Moon Phase on March 3, 2026 has the potential to increase the maximum sea level, including in Batam City (coastal areas of Batu Aji, Batu Ampar, Sekupang, Nongsa, and surrounding areas), Lingga Regency (coastal areas of West Singkep, Singkep Coast, Senayang and surrounding areas), Karimun Regency (coastal areas of West Kundur, Karimun, Meral, and surrounding areas), and Bintan Regency (coastal areas of North Bintan, Teluk Sebong, East Bintan, and surrounding areas).
This maximum tide phenomenon, according to him, can have an impact on community activities around ports and coasts, such as loading and unloading activities, coastal settlement activities, to aquaculture and inland fisheries.
BMKG Hang Nadim Batam urges coastal communities to remain vigilant against the potential for flash floods, especially during high tide, and to continue to monitor weather information and early warnings officially issued by BMKG.
