Beware, These Are Three Causes of Diabetic Foot Wounds That Are Difficult to Heal

JAKARTA - Diabetic foot is a term used to refer to a condition of complications in the feet experienced by people with diabetes. This complication is triggered by high blood sugar levels, which causes wounds on the feet to be easily infected.

Wounds on diabetic feet can be difficult to heal, especially if they are not treated quickly, which can even lead to amputation to stop the infection. Specialist sub-specialist vascular surgery at Pondok Indah Hospital, dr. Andrew Jackson Yang, said there were several things that caused diabetic foot wounds to be difficult to heal, as follows.

1. Iksemia (poor blood flow)

This condition is a lack of blood and oxygen flow to organs such as the heart, brain, or limbs. This is caused by blood vessels narrowing or clogging, which is exacerbated by high blood sugar levels.

"The lack of blood flow to tissues or organs of the body makes tissues or organs unable to supply enough oxygen and nutrients, so that their functions are disrupted and the risk of damage if they are not immediately treated, including wounds that are difficult to heal," said dr. Andrew, during a media discussion in Senayan, Jakarta, written Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

2. Neuropathy

Neuropathy or baal is a condition when a diabetic does not feel pain in a wound. Diabetics who have experienced complications such as neuropathy are very likely to have wounds on their feet without realizing it.

This happens because the nerves in the feet lose the ability to feel pain, so they tend not to be aware of wounds that can slow down treatment.

3. Infections are easy to occur

Another cause of diabetic foot wounds that are difficult to heal is because of the easy infection. Prolonged high blood sugar levels cause the function of tissue repair cells to be abnormal and immune system dysfunction, so the body is easily infected.

Therefore, it is very necessary for diabetics to always pay attention to any changes that occur in their bodies. If there is any wound, it is best to immediately see a doctor.

"Therefore, if you are found to have diabetes and have a foot wound that is difficult to heal, immediately consult a doctor to get the right treatment," he said.

With quick and proper treatment, the wound can be overcome well and prevent the need for amputation procedures to stop tissue infection.

"This can prevent the risk of serious complications such as amputation and maintain optimal patient quality of life," concluded dr. Andrew.
