Comfortable Homecoming with Little Ones: Beware of Health Symptoms that Often Appear on the Journey

JAKARTA - The Eid homecoming moment is a long journey full of enthusiasm, but for children, changes in weather, travel duration, and crowds of people can be a health challenge in itself. Respiratory tract infections (ISPA), fever, to digestive disorders are the most common problems lurking.

Dr. Nastiti Kaswandani, Sp.A (K), a pediatric specialist in the subspecialty of respirology, reminds parents not to ignore small signs that can turn into serious conditions during the trip home.

When Should Parents Start Worrying?

According to dr. Nastiti, there are several "red lights" that indicate that children's health problems have entered a serious stage:

Respiratory problems: A very severe cough accompanied by shortness of breath.

High fever: The child's body temperature reaches or exceeds 39°C.

Digestive disorders: Constant vomiting and diarrhea that trigger dehydration.

"Digestive problems often occur due to improper eating or poor hygiene. If a child starts vomiting, defecating, and looks weak due to dehydration, it can be very dangerous," he explained as quoted by ANTARA.

"Healthy Tourism" Strategy for Children

So that the journey remains safe and the child remains cheerful, the following are recommended preventive measures:

Cukupi Cairan & Nutrisi: Pastikan membawa bekal air minum yang cukup. Jangan tunggu anak haus untuk memberi minum guna mencegah dehidrasi, terutama di cuaca panas atau kemacetan panjang.

Protection from Transmission: As much as possible, avoid children being close to people who show symptoms of coughing or colds. Use masks and regularly wash your hands (or use hand sanitizer) after touching public facilities.

Management of Rest: Do not force continuous travel. Plan enough rest time so that the child's immune system does not drop due to fatigue.

Prepare a Personal "P3K Box": Always carry first aid medicines that children usually take, such as fever reducers, anti-nausea medicines, or electrolyte fluids.

Planning is the Key

The success of homecoming with children depends a lot on proper preparation. Choosing the right time to leave to avoid severe congestion and preparing hygienic home-made food will greatly help maintain the child's physical stability while on the road.
