PLN Distributes 23,040 Units of REC PT Borneo Indobara

JAKARTA - PT PLN (Persero) through the South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan Distribution Parent Unit (UID) has again distributed 23,040 units of Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) or equivalent to 23 megawatt hours (MWh) of green electricity to PT Borneo Indobara (BIB).

With this addition, PT BIB's use of REC services is now the largest in the Kalimantan region with 42,096 units or equivalent to 42 MWh from the previous 19,056 units since 2023.

Chief Operating Officer (COO) of PT BIB, Raden Utoro expressed his appreciation for PLN's commitment in supporting the implementation of the Green Mining Realization program, one of which is through REC services.

According to him, the electricity demand of PT BIB which is estimated to reach 200 to 240 megavolt ampere (MVA) in 2028, also requires support for electricity supply from PLN which is not only reliable and sufficient, but also environmentally friendly. This is in line with the Indonesian Government's program in moving towards a sustainable national mining.

"We really appreciate and thank PLN. This is a form of our support for government programs in terms of actively reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy efficiency, reducing fuel imports, and of course supporting national energy resilience," said Raden, Monday, March 2.

Raden continued, the commitment to Green Mining Realization shown by PT BIB is not only through the use of PLN REC services.

His party also continues to take a friendly approach to the environment in various sectors, including the electrification of operational fleets.

"This program is one of the first in Indonesia on a large scale, with a target of electrification in 2026 of 25 percent of the fleet has switched to electricity. Furthermore, by 2028 it is targeted to reach 75 percent, and from 2028 to 2029 towards the zero emission target," he explained.

PLN Retail and Commercial Director, Adi Priyanto, said that this cooperation is a form of collaboration between PLN and industry players in supporting the transition to clean energy in the country.

His party is committed to continuing to provide green electricity services as an effort to support the competitiveness of the Indonesian industrial sector, which is one of the backbones of the national economy.

"We are fully committed to supporting the competitiveness of the national industry by encouraging the use of clean and environmentally friendly energy. PLN not only provides reliable electricity, but also presents green products such as REC to help industrial customers increase competitiveness while contributing to the national energy transition agenda, especially green mining. Collaboration with the industrial sector is key in creating a sustainable clean energy ecosystem," said Adi.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of PLN UID South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan, Iwan Soelistijono, welcomed PT BIB's move to utilize PLN REC services as part of the implementation of clean energy and green mining practices.

Iwan believes that this collaboration can become a benchmark for clean energy transformation for other mining sectors in Indonesia.

"We appreciate and thank PT BIB for optimizing REC services as one of the commitments in carrying out green mining practices. Hopefully this spirit can inspire other industry players, so that the benefits of energy transition can be felt more widely," said Iwan.

The REC Green Energy as a Service (GEAS) service is PLN's green product innovation that guarantees the use of renewable energy (RE) in a transparent and internationally recognized manner.

Each REC certificate proves that the electricity used by customers comes from EBT or non-fossil plants, with the APX Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGRs) tracking system from the United States ensuring compliance with international standards.

Throughout 2025, PLN's REC sales nationwide reached 6.43 terawatt hours (TWh) or grew 19.65 percent compared to the previous year.
