MUI Condemns Israel-US Attack on Iran: Urges Indonesian Government to Withdraw from BoP Membership

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) responded to the escalation of Israeli and American attacks on Iran since Saturday, February 28, 2026.

Meanwhile, according to the official statement of the MUI, which circulated on Sunday, March 1, 2026, where the President of the United States (US) Donald Trump has announced a military attack on Iran. Trump called the US attack along with Israel a massive and sustained attack to destroy Iranian missiles and naval forces.

Regarding this, MUI condemned the attack by the United States (US) military along with Israel against Iran.

"MUI expresses its deep condolences for the death of the Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei as a result of the Israeli-American attack on (28/2/26)," read the official statement from MUI on Sunday, March 1.

MUI condemned the Israeli attack supported by America because it was against humanitarian values and the opening of the 1945 Constitution.

"MUI understands that Iran's attack on the Gulf countries is a retaliation for the attacks of the United States and Israel, which target military bases. Iran's retaliatory attack is justified and protected by international law," said the MUI official statement.

Therefore, to avoid a wider escalation, the United States and Israel must stop attacking Iran because these attacks are contrary to Article 2 (4) of the UN Declaration which states that all Member States shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State, or in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations.

MUI said the Israeli and US military attacks on Iran, which Iran has retaliated against, are serious escalations that could drag the Middle East region into a wider open conflict.

"This situation should not be seen as a separate incident, but rather part of a larger geopolitical configuration. It is the duty and responsibility of all countries to realize peace in order to provide maximum protection for civilians," he wrote.

In his statement, MUI said that the strategic motive behind this attack should be suspected as a systematic effort to weaken Iran's strategic position in the region, as well as limit Iran's support for the struggle for Palestinian independence.

"In the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict, MUI encourages various countries to become mediators to stop military attacks that have the potential to be a political pressure instrument to secure Israel's regional dominance over Palestine," he said.

The United States, which is playing a central role in managing the Palestinian conflict through the Board of Peace (Bop), faces a big question: is the strategy really aimed at a just peace, or does it strengthen the unbalanced security architecture and bury Palestinian independence.

"MUI urges the Indonesian government to withdraw membership from the BoP because it is seen as ineffective in realizing true peace in Palestine," the MUI's official statement read.

Still in the official statement of MUI, MUI assessed that in the BoP there was no real peace in Palestine.

"Because what happened was the opposite, Trump carried out an attack with Israel against Iran and triggered a regional war involving various forces, both directly and through proxies," he wrote.

MUI invites Muslims in various parts of the world to continue to perform Qunut Nazilah sincerely praying in prayer to ask for Allah's help and protection for Muslims who are experiencing difficulties, oppression, or disasters in various parts of the world.

In addition, MUI calls on the UN and the OIC to take maximum steps to stop the war and respect international law. MUI believes that war will only bring global misery.
