Iran Holds Supreme Leader Election After Ali Khameini Dies
JAKARTA - Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Larijani confirmed that the Assembly of Experts would meet on Sunday and begin the process of electing the Supreme Leader of Iran to replace Ali Khamenei who was killed.
"According to article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, in the event of the death of the supreme leader, the Assembly of Experts must choose the new supreme leader as soon as possible," Larijani said, as broadcast by Iranian national television.
"The Expert Council will meet today and the process will begin," he said, adding.
On Saturday morning (28/2) local time, the United States and Israel launched a series of attacks on Iran, including the capital Tehran, causing damage to infrastructure and the loss of civilian lives.
Iran then launched retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
On Sunday, Iranian state television confirmed that Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was martyred as a result of the US-Israeli missile attack.
Regarding the retaliatory attack, Larijani ensured that Iran does not intend to attack neighboring countries in the Middle East region, but Tehran intends to only attack US military bases, which are not the territory of their country.
