Floods from the Malaysian Interior Submerge Eight Districts in Nunukan
NUNUKAN - Flood shipments from upstream areas in Malaysia have submerged eight sub-districts in Nunukan Regency, North Kalimantan (Kaltara), since Tuesday (24/2/2026).
The flood was exacerbated by heavy rainfall in the border area which caused the river flow to increase drastically.
The Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Nunukan Regency, Asmar, said that the flood moved from the upstream area to the downstream area and had an impact on a number of sub-districts in two different areas.
"Five sub-districts in the Kabudaya area that were flooded were Lumbis Hulu, Lumbis Pansiangan, Lumbis (Mansalong), Sembakung Atulai, and Sembakung. In addition, three sub-districts in the Krayan area were also affected," said Asmar, Saturday (28/2/2026).
Asmar said that the water level in the upstream area was considered extreme and resulted in the water surface in the Lumbis River reaching 10.4 meters, causing the river to overflow and inundate the residents' settlements.
"The water then moves to the downstream area. In Sembakung District, the current water level is 4.50 meters, increasing from the normal condition of around 3 meters," he said.
He explained that this flood phenomenon had made the residents of Mansalong confused because the water level rose suddenly even though there was no heavy rain in the area.
"BPBD ensures that this condition is a direct impact of cross-country flood shipments," he concluded.
