Malaysia Investigates Alleged Attempt to Overthrow PM Anwar Ibrahim's Government Involving Foreign Media
JAKARTA - Malaysian police officials said they were investigating a suspected conspiracy to sabotage national stability and overthrow Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim's government.
Reuters reported on Friday, February 27, that Inspector General of Police Mohd Khalid Ismail said the alleged conspiracy to overthrow the Malaysian Government involved influential local figures and one international media institution.
However, Ismail in his statement did not mention the name of the person in question or the media institution.
He said the investigation into this alleged case was carried out under the law prohibiting undermining parliamentary democracy, an offense that can be punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison if found guilty.
Until now, the Malaysian Police have not released details about the alleged conspiracy.
