Changan Ready for Mass Production of Solid-State Batteries in 2027, Claims 1,500 Km Range
JAKARTA - Solid-state battery technology has long been said to be almost ready for electric vehicles, but the realization has not come. Now, a fresh wind is coming from Changan Automobile which is rumored to start installing its latest solid-state battery pack.
Launching Carscoops, Friday, February 27, the Chinese manufacturer will use the battery in robots and electric vehicles in the third quarter of this year. Changan has set a full mass production target for 2027.
Changan claims its new generation battery has an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. With these specifications, the electric vehicle that carries it is said to be able to travel more than 932 miles or about 1,500 kilometers in one charge.
Although the figure is considered very ambitious, the distance traveled so far has the potential to make Changan models more ideal for long-distance travel. Especially in remote areas where charging infrastructure is still limited.
This battery pack is named Golden Bell, in addition to offering high energy density, the technology is claimed to be 70 percent safer than conventional electric vehicle batteries. Not only that, this battery is also equipped with an artificial intelligence-based remote diagnostic system, which allows for real-time monitoring of conditions.
This approach shows that increasing system security and intelligence is an important part of its development strategy. The battery production will be carried out under Changan's new solid-state battery brand called Jingzhongzhao.
The company also plans to produce fully solid-state batteries, while still developing liquid and semi-solid-state batteries that still use liquid electrolytes. Changan's move is not the only one in the industry.
A number of other Chinese automotive manufacturers are also moving in a similar direction. Dongfeng Motor Corporation, for example, has tested its own solid-state batteries in extreme cold weather conditions.
The battery has an energy density of 350 Wh/kg and is claimed to be able to travel more than 620 miles or about 1,000 kilometers. Dongfeng is targeting a launch on a production car this year, with a target time of around September.
In addition, big names such as BYD Company, Chery Automobile, SAIC Motor, GAC Group, and CATL are also continuing to hunt for similar breakthroughs. This competition even involves global giants such as Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Honda.
