Spotify Reveals Changes in Music and Podcast Preferences During Ramadan in Indonesia

JAKARTA - During Ramadan, the habit of listening to music in Indonesia changes. Spotify data shows that streaming religious-themed music has increased almost twofold compared to last year.

As listening patterns continue to change during Ramadan, Spotify's editorial team adjusts the curation of playlists that are in line with the social dynamics and ritual activities that take place during the month.

Dimas Ario, Lead Music Editor at Spotify Indonesia said that the playlist curation is based on data and observations of existing cultural trends.

Therefore, Dimas added, Ramadan curation is arranged based on real moments through playlists that reflect changes in the rhythm of social interaction throughout the month.

"During this period, listeners tend to choose music that is calmer and reflective. Because Ramadan is also communal, nostalgic songs often feel more relevant, especially during moments of togetherness," he explained.

Seeing this trend, Spotify presents the feeling through nostalgic playlists such as Best 2000s and Ngetren 2010s that can evoke memories together.

On the other hand, for listeners who choose to spend Ramadan calmly and more reflective, we also curate playlists such as Sejuknya Ramadan and Ramadan Kamu 2026.

"We do this to create a more meaningful atmosphere and in line with the holy month of Ramadan," explained Dimas.

In addition to music, podcast consumption also shows changes during Ramadan, where Spotify sees an increase in interest in religious and spiritual content, education, and comedy, especially at 06.00-08.00 in the morning.

This year, special Ramadan podcast episodes come from Indonesian creators. Starting from Ramadan Nanya-Nanya from the Raditya Dika Podcast, LOGIN RESTART, to the Ramadan ESCAPE 2.0 series from Raymond Chin discuss questions that are bold and relevant to today's audience with Ust. Felix Siauw.

Users can also watch special Ramadan episodes from other creators such as RJL 5, Gue Punya Cerita, Rapot BUAKAKAK and others on Ramadan Hub.

"Our mission is to ensure that the content found feels in tune with the moment, so that music and podcasts can be the right companions for users," concluded Dimas.
