MA Batalkan Tarif Trump, RI Harap Tarif Nol Persen ke AS Tetap Berlaku
JAKARTA - The Indonesian government hopes that zero tariffs for a number of export commodities to the United States market will remain in place, even though the Supreme Court (MA) has canceled the reciprocal tariff policy previously imposed by US President Donald Trump.
Trade Minister Budi Santoso explained that there is still a period of consultation following the decision of the United States Supreme Court.
"But what we have signed, which is zero percent into America, we still hope it will work," said Budi as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, February 26.
The Indonesian and US governments on Thursday (19/2) signed a reciprocal tariff agreement. In the agreement, as many as 1,819 tariff posts for Indonesian products obtained duty-free facilities of up to zero percent.
Products covered include palm oil, coffee, cocoa, spices, rubber, electronic components including semiconductors, to aircraft components.
In addition, the two countries also agreed to eliminate zero percent import tariffs for Indonesian textile and garment products through a certain quota scheme.
However, a day after the agreement, on Friday (20/2), the US Supreme Court ruled that President Trump was not authorized to impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
The ruling has led the US to begin implementing a temporary global tariff of 10 percent, with the White House planning to raise it to 15 percent.
In front of Congress, Trump stated that almost all countries and companies want to maintain the tariff agreement that was made before the US Supreme Court ruling.
Meanwhile, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia ensures that there will be further talks with the US after the Supreme Court's decision to cancel Trump's reciprocal tariff policy.
