Juventus Sial, Galatasaray Passes Through Two Extra Time Goals
Juventus is unlucky. They were able to chase down the goal deficit but conceded in extra time in the second match of the Champions League playoff against Galatasaray. Even though they won 3-2 in the match at the Allianz Stadium, Thursday, February 26, 2026 early morning WIB, Juve still eliminated.
The 5-2 defeat in the first playoff at home to Galatasaray really made it difficult for Juve. The reason is that Juve has to chase the goal deficit. However, the team coached by Luciano Spalletti showed a high fighting spirit to turn things around.
Juve's efforts actually almost gave results. Even though they played with 10 people after losing defender Lloyd Kelly who got a red card when starting the second half, Juve still fought and won 3-0 until normal time.
It's just that with an aggregate of 5-5, the match continues extra time. In the extra time, Juve failed to score. Instead, Galatasaray was able to dramatically break the Bianconeri's goal twice through Victor Osimhen and Baris Yilmaz.
As a result, Galatasaray still lost 3-2. However, they had a 7-5 aggregate advantage so they qualified for the 16th round. Meanwhile, Juve had to bite their nails and Serie A Italy again lost its representative in the knockout round. Only Atalanta qualified because Inter Milan had already been eliminated.
In that match, Juve immediately gassed because they had to score at least three goals. As a result, they put pressure on Galatasaray's defense. However, the hosts had to wait for more than 30 minutes to break the opponent's goal.
The opportunity was finally obtained after midfielder Lucas Torreira knocked down Khephren Thuram-Ulien in the penalty box. The referee also pointed to the white spot for the offense.
The penalty was executed by Manuel Locatelli who managed to finish it. The goal in the 37th minute gave Juve a 1-0 lead. The score remained until the first half ended.
Entering the second half, Juve again put pressure because they still needed a goal as a condition to qualify for the knockout round. However, when the match was only three minutes, Juve lost a player after Llyod got a red card for breaking Yilmaz.
The referee reviewed the incident via VAR. The result was that both the English player and Yilmaz jumped for the ball. Only Lloyd's leg hit Yilmaz's thigh and heel when the two players both went down. The referee, who originally gave a yellow card, withdrew the red card for Llyod. The decision made the former Newcastle United defender not believe.
"The decision is absurd. He gets the ball. Then what does he do with his position like that? Frankly, we as defenders are most often punished in football these days," said center back Federico Gatti defending his teammate as quoted by Football Italia.
"Beyond that, the reaction shown by the players was really amazing. But what disappoints us is that we are exhausted when we go into extra time," he said again.
Yes, Juve still fight even though they are playing with 10 players. In fact, they were able to increase the lead when Gatti successfully completed Pierre Kalulu's assist in the 70th minute. The score changed to 2-0 for Juve.
They needed one more goal to force extra time so that La Vecchia Signora continued to play offensively. Midfielder Kenan Yildiz almost scored but his shot still hit the crossbar.
Juve's efforts finally paid off when Weston McKennie broke Galatasaray's goal in the 82nd minute. His header gave Juve a 3-0 lead. They needed one more goal for the match to be completed in normal time.
Only Juve failed to add a goal and the match continued with extra time. Galatasaray seemed to get extra strength so they could play offensively. And, the visiting team finally reaped the benefits. Osimhen successfully scored the first goal for Galatasaray in the 105+1 minute. The score changed to 3-1 and it brought Galatasaray into the last 16.
The goal from the former Napoli striker, who was once targeted by Juve, seemed to demoralize the Juve players. It turns out that the Turkish club even added a goal when Yilmaz defeated goalkeeper Mattia Perin in the 119th minute. The score changed to 3-2 for Juve. The goal that extinguished Juve's hopes because they were eliminated even though they won the match. Galatasaray qualified to face Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.
