Trump Accuses Iran of Developing Intercontinental Missile to Reach US
JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of trying to develop missiles that can attack the United States (US). Trump also accused Iran of trying to rebuild the nuclear program that was the target of a US attack last year.
The US-Iran is engaged in high-level negotiations on a nuclear deal, which the US then expanded with discussions on Tehran's missiles.
"They have developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases abroad, and they are trying to build missiles that will soon reach the United States," Trump claimed during his state of the union speech on Tuesday local time, quoted by AFP.
By 2025, the US Defense Intelligence Agency said Iran could potentially develop an intercontinental ballistic missile that could be militarily operational by 2035 "if Tehran decides to pursue the capability".
According to the US Congressional Research Service, Iran currently has short- and medium-range ballistic missiles with a range of up to about 3,000 kilometers.
The US mainland is known to be more than 6,000 miles from Iran's westernmost tip.
