Yoko City Ghost Brings the Aesthetics of Malari 74's Dystopia to Life through the Touch of a New Vocalist and Neo-Psychedelic Exploration

JAKARTA - Medan-based neo-psychedelic band Yoko City Ghost opens the 2026 page with a bang that is full of historical narratives and sound experimentation.

Through the latest single titled "Malari 74", the band known for its retrofuturistic persona not only released a regular musical work, but also introduced a new identity through the presence of their new vocalist, Tony Ruin.

Released under the label of a major label, this song became a bridge to their second full-length album which is scheduled to be released soon.

The choice of the title "Malari 74" is not without a strong reason. The event of the 15 January 1974 Catastrophe, which is a dark point in the history of Indonesian politics and society, is raised by Yoko City Ghost as an aesthetic dystopia.

They tried to photograph the tragedy through the eyes of neo-psychedelics - creating an atmosphere that seemed to take listeners back to the 1970s but with a touch of future sound technology.

For the personnel, the era has a very strong inner bond with their artistic vision so far.

The entry of Tony Ruin as a vocalist as well as a holder of synthesizers and tambourines gives a new and fresher color to the dynamics of Yoko City Ghost's music. His vocal character is considered capable of giving a different life without having to uproot the musicality that they have built since the debut album "Sputnik-1" (2024).

This change in formation actually emphasizes their exploration in combining indie rock elements, baroque, to lyrics that touch the realm of sci-fi and absurdism.

"This song is not just a new release to fill the catalog, but is the opening greeting from us for the second album that will land fully this year,"

"We want to photograph the darkness of history in that year, soak it up, then wrap it with the sound of the present that was imagined in that time," the band wrote in their statement, Tuesday, February 24.

The presence of this single also emphasizes that Yoko City Ghost remains consistent in voicing personal and social anxieties through experimental music.

Currently, the complete formation of Yoko City Ghost is strengthened by Tengku Ariy (bass), Tony Ruin (vocals/synthesizer), Ridho Zuhri (guitar), Kristian Glahita (kibor), Jose Ludofikus (drums), and Evan Ewaldo (synthesizer & sequencer).

They are rumored to be completing the process of working on the second album titled "Back to Earth". This album is a continuation of the "exploration of ugal-ugalan" that they started since the single "Malari 74" was released to the public.

With a strong narrative and mature musical composition, Yoko City Ghost is ready to take its listeners on a cinematic journey in the midst of a dystopian world.
