High Waves of Up to 6 Meters Threaten the South Sea of NTB

MATARAM - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warns of the potential threat of very high sea waves that can reach six meters in the waters south of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

BMKG NTB Meteorology Station Praktirawan Andre Jersey said the red zone of high waves ranging from 4 to 6 meters was in the Indian Ocean south of NTB.

"This warning is valid from February 24, 2026 at 08.00 Wita to February 25, 2026 at 08.00 Wita," he said, quoted by Antara Mataram, Tuesday, February 24.

In addition to the waters south of NTB, waves of 2.5 to 4 meters are also likely to occur in the southern Lombok Strait, the southern Alas Strait, the southern Sumbawa waters, and the southern Sape Strait.

Meanwhile, waves with moderate to high categories ranging from 1.25 to 2.5 meters are expected to occur in the Lombok Strait and the northern Alas Strait.

Andre urged fishermen and marine transportation operators to increase vigilance against the risk of shipping safety in line with the emergence of high waves.

Fishing boats are at high risk if the wind speed exceeds 15 knots and the wave height is above 1.25 meters. Meanwhile, ferry boats and cargo ships or cruise ships are at high risk if the sea waves are above 4 meters and the wind speed exceeds 27 knots.

"We urge people who are or are active on the coast around the area where high waves are likely to occur to always be alert," said Andre.

The BMKG analysis said that the combination of several meteorological and oceanographic factors was the main cause of the occurrence of high waves, including the strengthening of the Asian Monsoon, unstable atmospheric conditions, to long fetch distances.
