Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono Soroti Reform of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code at the UN Human Rights Council

JAKARTA - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono stated that Indonesia has carried out legal reforms to strengthen the balance between order, freedom, and prosperity for all citizens. The reform was carried out through the enactment of the new Criminal Code (KUHP) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (KUHAP).

Sugiono made the statement while speaking at the 61st High Level Segment of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Monday, February 23.

"In line with this, Indonesia has carried out legal reforms through the enactment of the new Criminal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure. This reform not only confirms our rule of law, but also strengthens the balance between order, freedom, and prosperity," said Sugiono.

He explained, Indonesia is currently also strengthening various efforts to realize social justice. The government is carrying out a number of programs aimed at meeting the basic needs of the community as part of respect for human rights.

According to Sugiono, human rights respect must begin from daily life, when children can learn without hunger, families have access to health services, the community feels safe, and every individual has the opportunity to develop. The principle, he said, is the basis for the implementation of human rights in the country.

"Expanding access to nutritious food, health services, housing, education, and economic empowerment is not merely a matter of formulating policies, but the realization of basic rights," he said.

On that occasion, Sugiono also emphasized Indonesia's commitment to continue collaborating with various human rights institutions. This cooperation is carried out constructively and sustainably, in line with national priorities and international norms.

"Indonesia continues to work closely with national human rights institutions, building constructive collaboration in ongoing efforts to advance and protect human rights," he said.

At the end of his statement, Sugiono expressed his appreciation for the trust given to Indonesia to assume the mandate as President of the UN Human Rights Council in 2026. He emphasized that Indonesia is committed to using this role to encourage real and meaningful progress in the enforcement of human rights at the global level.
