Child Dies After Being Abused, Police Chief Murka: Brimob Must Be Responsible

JAKARTA - National Police Chief General Pol. Listyo Sigit Prabowo said that he had ordered his ranks to thoroughly investigate the case of a Brimob member with the initials Bripda MS who allegedly tortured a minor to death.

"I have ordered that the case be thoroughly investigated and ensure that the perpetrators are punished appropriately and that justice is upheld for the victims' families," the National Police Chief said in a statement received by Antara, Monday, February 23.

The leader of the Bhayangkara Corps also expressed his deepest condolences to the victims' families and the community for the incident.

He also admitted that he was angry with this incident because it had defiled the honor of the Brimob.

"Just like what the victims' families and the community feel, I am angry to hear that this incident has occurred. This clearly tarnishes the reputation of the Brimob institution, which should protect the community," he said.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the Maluku Police will hold an ethics trial against Bripda MS at 14.00 WIT.

Maluku Regional Police Chief Inspector General Dadang Hartanto said the victim's family was scheduled to arrive from Tual at around 12.00 WIT before attending the ethics hearing at the Regional Police.

The family will first visit the hospital to check on one of the family members of the victim who was injured. Meanwhile, other family members can follow the trial through online or zoom facilities.

According to him, the code of ethics trial will be held in accordance with the provisions of Propam. Some of the process can be opened to the public, but there are stages that are closed to delve into the facts of the incident. The results of the trial will be announced publicly.

As for accelerating the legal process, the Maluku Police have coordinated with the prosecutor's office. The Police Chief admitted that he had communicated with the Deputy Chief Prosecutor and the ranks of the Public Prosecutor to oversee the acceleration of the case.

Previously, based on the chronology provided by the police, the incident began when the Brimob patrol carried out a condition-creating activity using tactical vehicles in the Tual City and Southeast Maluku Regency areas, Thursday (19/2) early morning.

The patrol was initially at the Mangga Dua Complex, Langgur until around 02.00 WIT. Then, it shifted to Fiditan Village, Tual City after receiving reports from residents regarding the alleged beating around the Tete Pancing area.

While at the location, the suspect along with a number of members got out of the vehicle and carried out security. About 10 minutes later, two motorbikes sped at high speed from the direction of Ngadi to Tete Pancing.

The suspect is said to have swung a tactical helmet as a signal. However, the helmet hit the right temple of the victim AT (14) until the victim fell from the motorcycle in a prone position.

The victim was then rushed to the Karel Sadsuitubun Langgur Hospital for medical treatment. However, at 13.00 WIT, the victim was declared dead.

After the incident, the victim's family came to Mako Brimob Tual to demand justice. The police responded by immediately securing and arresting Bripda MS on the same day.
