US Announces New 10 Percent Tariffs to Take Effect 150 Days Starting February 24
The White House announced new import tariffs of 10 percent set by US President Donald Trump will be in effect for 150 days from February 24.
"The proclamation stipulates that, for a period of 150 days, the ad valorem import duty of 10 percent will be imposed on goods imported into the United States," according to a White House statement reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, February 21.
"The temporary import tax will be in effect on February 24 at 00.01 eastern standard time (12.01 WIB)," said the White House announcement.
Previously, President Trump stated that he had signed an executive order to impose new import tariffs of 10 percent on all countries.
The new tariffs were set following a ruling by the US Supreme Court that President Trump did not have the authority to impose global import tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Trump said the ruling was "very disappointing" and even accused the Supreme Court judges of being influenced by "foreign interests".
The US President also ensured that all tariffs imposed on the basis of national security would remain in place.
