US Supreme Court Strikes Down Several of Trump's Tariff Policies
JAKARTA - The United States Supreme Court's decision to overturn some of President Donald Trump's global tariff policies dealt a serious blow to the American people while depriving Trump of significant influence, said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
"Today is a defeat for the American people because by removing President Trump's immediate influence in using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), the American people have suffered a significant setback," Bessent said on Fox News, as quoted by the Ria Novosti news agency.
On Friday (20/2 local time), the US Supreme Court, by a 6-3 vote, ruled that President Donald Trump was not authorized to impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
Trump called the US Supreme Court's (SC) ruling "very disappointing" and accused the SC of being influenced by "foreign interests".
He then emphasized that all national security tariffs remained in effect, and that the Supreme Court's ruling specifically only concerned the use of the IEEPA tariff.
