EU Warns of Serious Impact of US Military Escalation in the Middle East
JAKARTA - The European Union (EU) warned that any military escalation related to tensions over Iran's nuclear program would have a "serious impact" on the stability of the Middle East region, while expressing support for diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
"We welcome the report on progress in diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran, which we fully support," said European Commission spokesman Anouar El Anouni, quoted by ANTARA from Anadolu, Friday, February 20.
He stressed that diplomacy remains the only possible path to take. "It is time for Iran to show seriousness in responding to the concerns of the international community," he said.
Highlighting the risk of increased tensions, El Anouni stressed that military escalation could have a major impact on regional stability.
He reiterated the European Union's strong commitment to peace, security, and stability in the Middle East, and urged all parties to act responsibly.
"It is very important for all parties to abide by international law, refrain from taking any action that could trigger a new escalation in the Middle East," El Anouni said.
Washington has significantly increased its military presence in the Middle East region by deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group.
The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford was also reported to be heading to the area, along with an additional fleet of fighter jets.
The meeting in Geneva was the second round of negotiations since US President Donald Trump ordered an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities in June last year. The first round was held in Muscat, Oman, on February 6.
