Tarawih Prayer Time Limits that Must Be Known According to Ulama

YOGYAKARTA - Tarawih prayer is one of the sunnah prayers that Muslims carry out during the month of Ramadan. This sunnah prayer also has very special advantages. In addition to getting abundant rewards, every Muslim who performs Tarawih prayer can also strengthen the bond of togetherness among fellow Muslims through the implementation of congregational prayer.

However, although Tarawih prayer is a very recommended and blessed worship, there is one thing that is often overlooked by some people, namely regarding the time limit for Tarawih prayer, especially for those who carry it out alone at home.

Because of busyness or ignorance, many miss the opportunity to establish this sunnah prayer on time.

Quoted from the NU Online page, the following is the deadline for tarawih prayers that must be carried out.

Procedures for Performing Tarawih Prayers

Tarawih prayer can be done alone or in congregation, but the most important thing is to do it in congregation. This prayer is carried out with one salam every two rakaats. The intention is "Ushalli rak'ataini minat tarâwih" or "Ushalli rak'ataini min qiyâmi ramadlân."

Tarawih is a form of jama' (plural) of tarwihatun which has the meaning of a unit of rest. So, tarawih means several times to rest. It is called by this term, because the scholars used to rest every time they established four rakats or two salam.

Syekh Ibnu Hajar al-Haitami menegaskan:

And they were called the Tarawih, because they would rest after eachtwo rakats.

"And it is called tarawih, because they rest every two salam, because of the length of standing. They rest after every two salam (four rakats)," (Syekh Ibnu Hajar al-Haitami, Tuhfah al-Muhtaj, juz 2, p. 241).

Tarawih is included in the sunnah prayer of muaqqatah, which is a sunnah prayer that is given special time. In other words, if Tarawih prayer is carried out outside the time that has been determined by the Shari'ah, then the law is not valid.

Tarawih Prayer Deadline

According to a strong opinion in the Shafi'i school, the time of Tarawih is the same as the time of Witir prayer, namely the time between Isya prayer and the rising of the dawn. Thus, Tarawih prayer must be established after Isya prayer, and it is not valid if it is done before.

It is also recommended to end the Witir prayer from the Tarawih prayer. According to al-Imam al-Halimi, the time for its implementation is after passing a quarter of the night or more. What is meant by night according to the term of Shari'ah is starting from the setting of the sun until the dawn.

The description is as explained in the reference below:

His saying and time between the evening prayer and the dawn is like thefasting in the time and it is delayed from it.

"The words of Sheikh Ibn Qasim, the time of Tarawih is between Isya' prayer and the rising of the dawn, so Tarawih is like Witir in terms of time, and it is recommended to end Witir from Tarawih," (Sheikh Ibrahim al-Bajuri, Hasyiyah al-Bajuri 'ala Ibni Qasim, juz 1, hal. 261)

And when it is the time of the afternoon, and in its case before the evening, contrary to the truth: the prohibition. Al-Halimi said: It only enters after a quarter of the night has passed.

"And the time of Tarawih is the time of Witir prayer. Regarding the ability to perform Tarawih before Isya there is a difference of opinion, according to the opinion of al-ashah (the strong) it is prohibited. Imam al-Halimi said, there is no time for Tarawih except after passing a quarter of the night or more," (Syekh Kamaluddin al-Damiri, al-Najm al-Wahhaj fi Syarh al-Minhaj, juz 2, hal. 310).
