Tyson Fury Has No Coach Ahead of Duel Against Arslanbek Makhmudov
JAKARTA - Former World Boxing Council (WBC) world champion Tyson Fury claims he has no coach ahead of his fight against Arslanbek Makhmudov, which marks his return to the boxing ring after deciding to retire in January 2025.
Fury, who is a two-time world heavyweight champion, will return from retirement on April 11, 2026 after a year's absence from the boxing world. He will fight Makhmudov at the Tottenham Stadium, London, England.
In an interview on 5 Live Boxing with Steve Bunce, Fury said he would prepare for the fight alone, without the coaches and other support teams that professional fighters usually need.
"I don't need a coach, I don't need a nutritionist, I don't need a mental coach, I don't need a sleep coach, and I definitely don't need a strength coach," he said as reported by BBC Sport.
The 37-year-old boxer has previously been trained by SugarHill Steward since 2019. The American coach helped him win the WBC world title and trained him in two defeats against Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury said he only needed a small team when fighting later, namely who would help him clean his mouthguards, give him a drink between rounds, and apply vaseline.
"The rest I leave to me. (I have) a PhD (doctor) in boxing," said the boxer nicknamed the Gypsy King.
Fury had decided to retire after suffering a series of defeats from Usyk, the two-time undisputed heavyweight world champion from Ukraine. The British boxer has a record of 34 wins in 37 fights, including one draw.
The Gypsy King then decided to return earlier this year in order to pursue the world title again. In addition, he has also been linked with a number of big fights, such as against his compatriot Anthony Joshua and chasing a trilogy against Usyk.
